Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham provides one of the largest colposcopy services in the West Midlands. The Colposcopy service provides clinics at Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital(s). As the Band 6/7 Nurse Colposcopist you will be part of a team that provides high quality care for women in these areas.

The service is continuing to grow, being the default site for many primary care settings, including secure units.

This is a very exciting time to join this expanding team and be involved in developing the service.

We are looking for someone who will undertake the BSCCP colposcopy training course and who can work autonomously but within a team. Strives for high standards and ensures women get the standard of care they deserve.

On successful completion of the colposcopy training you will be required to facilitate your own Nurse Led clinics where you will be expected to provide diagnostic and treatment colposcopy; ensuring you provide the standard of care as per NHSCSP guidelines.

You will provide cover for colposcopy colleagues as required and support the Lead Nurse in the day to day running of the service, including producing mandatory reports required by Public Health England (PHE).

You will be required to deputise and represent the Colposcopy service at the cervical screening meetings.

You will be part of a very supportive Multidisciplinary Team and attend monthly Colposcopy MDT meetings.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

Trainee Nurse Colposcopist Post (Band 6) - The post holder will be trained in colposcopy, to develop and extend their theoretical knowledge and practical skills towards achieving accreditation with the BSCCP (British Society of Colposcopy & Cervical Pathology).

The individual will undertake the recognised BSCCP colposcopy course developing the skills and knowledge to become an autonomous practitioner undertaking nurse-led colposcopy clinics to ensure all women requiring colposcopy, biopsy and treatment procedures experience an efficient, quality service whilst demonstrating a supportive, sensitive and approachable manner.

Following completion of the colposcopy training and successfully passing the final OSCE examination you will be awarded a Band 7; having a key role in leading and developing the colposcopy service across the organisation.

Using advanced nursing practice; manage a cohort of patients referred for specialist intervention, care and support.

Demonstrate highly developed and advanced specialist knowledge and skills through innovative practice leading to the development of increasing levels of autonomy.

Develop strategies to ensure practice development and education for other health care workers caring for patients within this speciality.

The post holder will be a core member of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT)
