Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic and able Consultants in Infection to join the integrated Infection Service across the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. These are posts supported by an expansion in inpatient work at the Queen Elizabeth site. They represent an exciting opportunity to practice clinical infection across a large Trust which includes tertiary and secondary care services and serves a diverse population of approximately 2 million people.

The post holder will work across the 4 hospital sites -- Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital. They may also be required to support additional hospitals regionally eg, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The post holder will have the opportunity to rotate across all clinical activities of the integrated infection service. This includes inpatient work, a clinical infection consultant service, close working with Acute & General Internal Medicine, a regional Tuberculosis service, Military Services, Tropical Medicine, Viral Hepatitis, Complex Outpatient Antibiotic, Orthopaedic infection, HIV, Immunology & Allergy, Clinical Microbiology and Paediatrics.

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

The Direct Clinical Care PAs will be worked flexibly by agreement with Consultant colleagues over as monthly blocks as part of an annualised job plan. There is no prospective cover provided within the weekly job plan. On-call out of hours will be shared between the Consultant team.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

*Full GMC Registration.

*Entry on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of CCT/CESR in Infectious Diseases.

*MRCP (or evidence of equivalent training or experience).

Desirable

*CCT/CESR in General (Internal) Medicine or Medical Microbiology (or within 6 months of achieving such).

*Higher degree such as PhD or MD.

*Training in teaching skills.

*Instructor status in at least one of ATLS/ALS or APLS.

Experience

Essential

*Comprehensive clinical experience in infectious diseases and related activities e.g. infection consultation service.

*Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council.

Desirable

*Experience of integrated micro/ID clinical service.

*Experience in management of bone/joint infections.

*Experience of complex community antibiotic treatment service.

*Experience of managing general medical inpatients.

Additional Criteria

Essential

*Acceptable health record over previous 2 years (in accordance with standards identified in Trust policy).

*To have an involvement in teaching junior doctors and nurses.

*To have an involvement in undergraduate education.

Desirable

*Live within 15 miles/30minutes of Trust base (unless an exemption is granted by the Medical Director).

*Car owner/driver.
