Band 7 Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist - Skin Oncology

The closing date is 10th Oct 2022

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Skin Cancer CNS team in a full time (37.5hours), Band 7 Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist post. The role encompasses caring for patients throughout their skin cancer journey and will include supporting them through diagnosis, primary treatment and recurrence, and helping them with treatment decisions along the way. Whilst the post holder will work primarily within Dermatology and Plastic Surgery, we also work very closely with our Oncology colleagues when systemic treatment and palliative care are needed. Some of our patients come from the local area, with many being referred from other hospitals to be cared for by our Specialist team.

The CNS role involves providing support and information to patients; ensuring they are kept informed of changes and are seen at appropriate points in their pathway. It involves liaison with family members, and with a variety of care providers. The weekly multi-disciplinary meeting is an opportunity to put forward the patient's voice as well as an excellent learning environment.

The role is varied, demanding, yet satisfying. The ideal candidate would already be working at Band 6 or above, have relevant experience of working with skin cancer patients and be able to work independently to manage their caseload, yet still be part of the team. The ability to ask when unsure and to learn quickly is essential as this is a busy role with patients being seen within a large number of clinics.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

Participate in nurse led and multidisciplinary clinics, ward rounds, patient reviews and multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT). These may be face to face, virtual or telephone, and incorporate the use of agreed protocols clinical and professional guidelines.

Provide highly visible clinical presence across a variety of Dermatology and Plastic Surgery clinics and demonstrate expert knowledge and high standards of clinical practice. Provide support or advice to patients, staff, families and carers when necessary.

Provide a seamless, high quality service for patients from referral through to assessment, diagnosis, treatment and review, referring to other specialists as required. Provide guidance to staff, patients, their families and carers on pathway navigation.

Provide a specialist nursing service and advice in a variety of clinical settings and disciplines for staff, patients, their families and carers, effectively liaising with multidisciplinary colleagues.

Act as a point of contact for questions and concerns both during treatment and follow up, and also once discharged from our care.

Work autonomously, organise own workload and manage own caseload and practice, identifying and maintaining supportive networks for self and others.
