Job summary

Due to the continued development and expansion of the Pre-operative Assessment Unit an exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic experienced Band 5 Staff Nurse to become part of a well-established and progressive team.

A challenging and busy environment the Pre-Operative Assessment Service works within UHB as a specialist team, providing assessment and information to a wide group of patients prior to surgery. You will be expected to uphold and ensure that high standards of care and professionalism are maintained and delivered with care and compassion. We aim to provide services that ensure patients can return to the best level of independence they can achieve, through providing health and wellbeing services and information

We are a nurse led service and will fully support you in attending the Pre-Operative Assessment Foundation course. You will be appointed a mentor to support you in your training and development in this role. Further training will be provided for clinical examination (heart and lung assessment) with the opportunity to work towards the ECG Interpretation and Arrhythmia Management course. This is an exciting role for an experienced Registered Nurse to work closely with patients to help plan their surgical journey and involves working closely with senior colleagues to ensure that patients are safe to undergo surgery and anesthesia

Main duties, tasks & skills required

To ensure a high standard of patient care is delivered in an effective and efficient manner reflecting the overall philosophy of the service on a regular basis.

To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care in line with local and national guidelines. Act as a role model delivering care on a nurse led basis and supervise unregistered nurses in the delivery of care to acute and chronically sick patients in varying stages of illness and from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Contribute to the development of a learning culture to ensure growth and development of the nursing team and students. Successful achievement of competencies and training is required to facilitate full undertaking of the role.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced nurse with a holistic approach to care, excellent communication and organizational skills with a willingness to learn and develop within this specialist field of nursing.

Qualifications

Essential

Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC Register

Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC

Experience

Essential

Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary NHS care setting (can include student placements within the last 12 months )

Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development/ competence

Experience of working on own and in a team in a health care environment delegating to others within a team / providing supervision to others

Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor to or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment

Understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct

Understanding of preceptorship and work based learning and assimilation of skills and knowledge

Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context

Understanding / experience of the principles of safeguarding and Mental Capacity

Awareness of health and safety issues
