Job summary

An opportunity has arisen within the award winning Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Service for the West Midlands. We are recruiting a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the Principal Treatment Centre Team as a secondment/fixed term to cover maternity leave 12 months. You will be responsible for providing excellence in clinical care for Teenagers and Young Adults (aged 13 -- 24) with cancer and their families.

Based on the Teenage Cancer Trust Young Persons Unit, you will play a key role in providing quality TYA patient care in line with Peer review measures. Working across site specific teams and with the existing Band 7 TYA CNS, support delivery of age appropriate care, whilst also promoting the philosophy and ethos of Teenage Cancer Trust, in line with the charities strategic vision for Nursing.

You will be required to work autonomously and exercise a high level of clinical expertise when identifying and caring for the specific needs of TYA patients and their carers. You will need excellent interpersonal skills, TYA nursing experience, knowledge of TYA cancers and the ability to work sensitively and collaboratively with diverse teams. By working alongside the TYA team and Site Specific Teams you will promote a cohesive approach to TYA care.

You will be supported by the Band 7 Teenage Cancer Trust CNS, Teenage Cancer Trust Lead Nurse, the TYA MDT based at QE and the wider regional Band 7 Nurses. Teenage Cancer Trust will support your professional development.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

In partnership with members of the multidisciplinary team the post holder will develop individual competence and knowledge which will support the provision and evaluation of seamless specialist nursing service, ensuring patients receive the highest standard of clinical care. Through work based learning and development the post holder will develop specialist knowledge and skills, demonstrated through the provision of advice, education and support to staff, patients their families and carers. Whilst undertaking the role the post holder will be supported by more experienced nurse or nurses to enable them to achieve competence in agreed areas of specialist practice through exposure, training and education to agreed levels of competence to enable autonomous practice within the speciality. The post holder will actively undertake and participate in clinical audit and service evaluation within their specialist area. The post holder is responsible for contributing to the ongoing development of clinical practice, standards of care within the service including the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines. Contribute to service developments in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues. The post holder is accountable for their safe, effective clinical practice and working as part of a defined team and supporting team performance, ensuring efficient and effective use of physical and human resources.
