Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and experienced individual to join this well-established specialist breast care nursing service at University Hospitals of Birmingham NHS Trust. The post will be primarily based at Solihull Hospital but there will be opportunities for cross site working. The post is full time, but part time/job share can be considered. Secondments may be considered if the applicant is new to the area of work.

The post holder will work with the team delivering an expert specialist service to patients diagnosed with breast cancer at all stages of diagnosis and treatment in a kind compassionate manner. With a commitment to the delivery of a high-quality holistic patient care you will play an active part in clinical practice, management of patient caseload, education, research, audit and professional activities relating to breast cancer care.

The Breast team is committed to developing services to enhance the delivery of patient care and patient experience and you will be keen to be pro-active in service developments.

The role involves working in both Surgical, Screening and Oncology clinical settings and helping to coordinate the patients' pathway. These posts will suit someone with excellent communication and organisational skills and the ability to foster effective working relationships.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

This post will involve working as a key worker to cancer patients within a team of specialist nurses so it is essential that you have;

* At least 2 years current experience at Band 5 or above in an area related to breast cancer .

* 1st Level Related Degree or working towards

* Good communication skills

* Ability to work as a key worker and as part of a team

* Willingness to undertake additional training such as the Breast Care Nursing Course and advanced communication skills training.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

* Registered Adult / Child Nurse on the NMC Register.

* To have or working towards a related BSc qualification

Desirable

* To have or working towards advanced health assessment module -- where applicable to the role

* Advanced communication skills training (ACST)

* Evidence of post registration CPD / Post registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience and short courses to degree / masters level equivalent FHEQ Level 6 /7

* Recognised mentorship course

* Breast Care Nursing Course ( A11 or equivalent)

Experience

Essential

* Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC

* Significant years post registration experience and at least 12 months at B6 or above in defined speciality

* Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level

* Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development/ competence.

* Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to speciality

* Working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment

* Experience of patient service user advocacy role

Desirable

* Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator

* Experience in service development

* Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programmes and teaching / assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting

Additional Criteria

Essential

* Ability to explain the requirement to balance clinical caseload

* Ability to communicate with a wide range of health care professionals, on a variety of complex and sensitive issues which require persuasive and empathetic skills.

* Ability to work autonomously , manage / prioritise own workload , supervise / appraise and asses junior staff

* Competent in a range of clinical skills and expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice required.

* Ability to work within the NHS Breast Screening Programme framework/ requirements

* Ability to work under pressure across competing priorities

* Ability to, undertake clinical audit , analyse information and develop robust measureable action plans to support improvement / change

* Evidence of ability to compile reports and documents for internal / external communication

* Knowledge of current evidence based practice and ability to apply to service and policy development

* Can demonstrate expert nursing knowledge and experience within the specialty - with an ability to assess, plan , implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and give advice and information to patients / relatives/ care staff

* Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the speciality

Desirable

* Ability to work within a team of specialist nurses and to lead on initiatives for the service.
