Job summary

Would you like to work in of one of the largest Critical Care units in Europe caring for patients across a variety of specialities including neurology, trauma, respiratory and cardiothoracics? Due to internal movement our tertiary centre has openings for a specialist SLT to join our Critical Care and Neurology teams. This role will primarily be focused within the Critical Care team and the neurosciences team (inpatient and/or outpatient) based at QEHB and will work flexibly alongside the wider SLT team.

You will benefit from a robust supervision structure alongside innovation, participation in research and clinical/professional development being encouraged. You would be part of a well-established team which also benefits from SLT-led Videofluoroscopy and FEES services so opportunities to access these instrumental assessments to help to shape your clinical practice would also be available.

QEHB benefits from one of the largest acute SLT teams in the country with more than 30 team members and is one of the largest teaching hospital Trusts in England, treating over 2.8 million people every year. We are a regional centre for cancer, trauma, dialysis and have highly specialist cardiac, liver, transplant and neurosurgery services.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

You would work within the acute Speech and Language Therapy team at QEHB, specifically working within the Critical Care and Neurology team. You would work closely with the Band 7 Team Leaders for Critical Care and Neurology, Band 7 highly specialist SLT in Critical Care plus Band 5 Speech and Language Therapists and Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapy peers to provide an excellent level of care to our patient group.

The successful candidate will be dysphagia competent and have a clear passion in Critical Care and Neurology. Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

*assessing and managing patients with dysphagia and communication disorders

*assessing and managing patients with altered airways e.g. tracheostomy

*service development

*training of colleagues and members of the MDT and supervision responsibilities for junior members of the team

*working flexibly and thriving in a fast-paced, acute environment

We have a large team who share a caseload of diverse patient cohorts so being a team player is essential. We would welcome a candidate who is has experience working with patients in Critical Care but our supportive team will be willing to support your development in these areas.

At present, we have a voluntary weekend service in some clinical areas. Please note, interviews will be via video.

Qualifications

Essential

A good standard of secondary education including

A-Level or equivalent.

BSc or recognised MSc degree in Speech and

Language Therapy.

Membership of RCSLT.

Registration with HCPC.

Completed RCSLT Level C dysphagia

competencies (or above).

Completed RCSLT NQP competencies.

Experience

Essential

Experience of working independently with adult

dysphagia caseload.

Experience of working within an adult inpatient

setting.

Experience working within Critical Care and/or

with patients with altered airways.
