Job summary

We have a rare opportunity for a Specialist SLT to join our neurosciences and trauma team at QEHB for 6 months. Our service supports a wide range of patient cohorts from acute head injury, to trauma and progressive neurological conditions. QEHB has been designated both a Level 1 Major Trauma Centre (MTC) and host of the UK's only National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC) and is a designated Hyper-acute Stroke Research Centre (HSRC).

Our SLTs benefit from a robust supervision structure alongside innovation, participation in research and clinical/professional development being encouraged. You would be part of a well-established team which also benefits from SLT led Videofluoroscopy and FEES services so opportunities to access these instrumental assessments to help to shape your clinical practice would also be available.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The successful candidate would be part of both the acute neuro-trauma team serving a diverse clinical caseload at QEHB. You would work closely with the SLT Team Leaders, NQP Speech and Language Therapists and peer Specialist Speech and Language Therapists to provide an excellent level of care to our patient group.

The successful candidate will have a clear passion in assessing and managing dysphagia and communication difficulties relating to the neurosciences and trauma caseloads. Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

*assessing and managing patients with swallowing and communication disorders on the neurosciences and trauma wards

*service development and audit

*working closely with the MDT

*training of junior colleagues and students

*working towards utilising specialist assessments such e.g. FEES, tracheostomy

*working flexibly and thriving in a fast-paced environment

We have a large team who share a caseload of diverse patient cohorts so being a team player is essential.

At present, we have a voluntary weekend service in some clinical areas.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

A good standard of secondary education including A-Level or equivalent.

BSc or recognised MSc degree in Speech and Language Therapy.

Membership of RCSLT.

Registration with HCPC.

Completed RCSLT Level C / EDS Level 5 dysphagia competencies (or above).

Completed RCSLT NQP competencies.

Experience

Essential

Experience of working independently with adult dysphagia caseload.

Experience of working within an adult inpatient and/or outpatient setting.

Experience working within neurology, neurosurgery, trauma and/or relevant caseload.
