Job summary

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a self-motivated, proactive individual to join our close knit dynamic team. This position is well suited to someone who is enthusiastic and looking to apply their technical and management skills, and is passionate about making a difference for our patients. The candidate will be responsible for the general management of the Orthodontic Department including the Orthodontic laboratory, working closely with the Consultant and management.

A busy laboratory based within the department of Orthodontics, at Good Hope Hospital is part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is recognised as one of the leading NHS trusts in the UK. The individual will work closely with clinical team with the common goal of producing Orthodontic technical work and problem solving to the highest standards. Working with the right candidate we will be looking to assess and implement how we move towards digital work flows.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

You will need to demonstrate a high level of manual dexterity, a working knowledge of technical procedures relevant to Orthodontic technology, good communication skills and knowledge of laboratory health and safety. Experience of working effectively with a range of laboratory materials is required and digital techniques are increasingly being incorporated within the workflow. Some prior knowledge and experience of such technology may be advantageous, though not essential at this time.

The post holder will work in the laboratories and will help process and construct work coming from the Orthodontic clinics. In addition you may be called to give technical advice in the clinic with patients. The successful candidate can expect to regularly process models (gypsum) for the construction of appliances/treatment planning, Kesling setups, construct active and passive removable appliances, sleep apnoea and vacuum formed appliances. This is by no means exhaustive and the candidate would be required to be flexible in where they worked in order to provide the support required. There will be an expectation to be involved in all aspects of the running of the lab to ensure the smooth running. The ability to prioritise your own work is an essential part of this role. There will be wider departmental and budgetary responsibilities.

Qualifications

Essential

* BSc Dental Technology / BTEC ND Dental Technology, or equivalent

* Professional diploma /H.N.D /C (majoring in Orthodontic Technology), or equivalent.

* Registered with General Dental Council as a Dental Technician.

* Compliant with GDC mandatory training

Desirable

* Post graduate qualification or equivalent experience.

* Evidence of an on-going interest in Orthodontic Technology.

* 2 Years post qualification experience of

Orthodontics within a hospital setting.

* Certificate in PAR Calibration.

* Membership of Orthodontic Technicians Association (via BOS)

Experience

Essential

* A working knowledge of fixed, functional, and removable appliances is required.

* Minimum 2 years relevant post qualification experience (7 years total)

* Experienced in Highly complex appliance design and construction.

* Experience in a specialist dental laboratory

* A good understanding of clinical governance, risk management and health and safety principles.

* Experience in a managerial and leadership role within an acute healthcare setting which is commensurate with the complexity and size of the allocated area of responsibility.

* Experience of developing and maintaining active partnerships with stakeholders in the development of services.

* Experience of directly line managing and providing leadership to team members ranging from bands 3-7

* Experience of managing individual and team performance through the setting of objectives, PDPs and appraisals.

* Ability to make independent decisions when appropriate.

Desirable

* Evidence of ability to provide a high-level Orthodontic service and delivering excellent standards of patient care.

* Experience in hospital Orthodontic/Oral Surgery unit treating a range of cases.

* Experience of PAR scoring

* Experience and Knowledge of budgetary management including sound working knowledge of revenue expenditure, budgets, capital including forecasting trends.
