Ward 12, Heartlands Emergency General surgery specialising in Colorectal and Upper GI.

Your professional journey on ward 12 will include a comprehensive induction, preceptorship, mentoring, trust wide and specialist in-house study days. To support your development, we have a Clinical Educational team who alongside very supportive ward staff, will guide you in developing your skills and knowledge in caring for a wide variety of surgical patients as well as to develop your leadership skills. Ward 12 cares for patients from a variety of emergency surgical specialities both pre and post operatively. The skilled nursing team is a key component of the emergency general surgical multi --disciplinary team. You will work collaboratively with the doctors, Critical Care Outreach, clinical nurse specialists, dietician and therapists to optimise the patients' condition and recovery.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

To be fully aware of local policies and procedures and those for the Trust.

To be aware of own training needs and developmental needs within the clinical

environment.

To deliver patient care using the philosophy of individualised patient care.

To participate in health education.

To report on care given, to other members of staff, communicating changes as they

occur.

To liase with other health care professionals.

To be aware of and respect the patients rights for confidentiality.

To be conversant with the 'Code of Professional Conduct' in duties.

To be professionally accountable for all actions during working shift.

To supervise student/learner nurses and unqualified nurses in the giving of patient care.

Qualifications

Essential

*Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC Register

*Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC

Experience

Essential

*Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary NHS care setting (can include student placements within the last 12 months )

*Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development/ competence

*Experience of working on own and in a team in a health care environment delegating to others within a team / providing supervision to others

*Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor to or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment

*Understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct

*Understanding of preceptorship and work based learning and assimilation of skills and knowledge

*Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context

*Understanding / experience of the principles of safeguarding and Mental Capacity

*Awareness of health and safety issues
