Job summary

Are you ready to develop your nursing career in the exciting and expanding area of Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD)?

The University Hospital Birmingham is one of eleven Level 1 ACHD Centers in the UK, so being a CNS within our team is a great opportunity to work with a varied and complex group of cardiology patients as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT). As a CNS, you will deliver expert care and advice throughout their lives and see patients in clinics and in-patient environments, as well as providing telephone and e-mail advice to patients, families and other professionals. You will also be responsible for leading a specific area of work within the service and driving service development change and projects. Areas within the ACHD service are: Transition, Medical Management, Intervention, Surgery, Pregnancy, Pulmonary Hypertension, Heart Failure/Advanced Symptoms, Transplantation, and End of Life Care.

In this role you will develop skills such as advanced assessment and prescribing, research and audit, and education. Education and support specific to ACHD will be planned with you to build your knowledge of this area. Continuous professional development is fully supported and encouraged. With previous holders being supported to attend national and international conferences and training days

You will need to be able to work collaboratively as a team, but also automatously and be self-driven and able to prioritise and manage your own time and group of patients.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

We're looking for an enthusiastic and motivated nurse who is passionate about caring for our large and specialised cohort of patients who are at varying stages of their ACHD journey. You will have significant experience of working with patients in a cardiac setting. Previous experience with congenital heart disease patients is desirable, but not essential as training and support will be given.

You will be assessing patients, planning and coordinating care and treatment in a variety of settings in conjunction with the wider team. You will have, or be willing to be trained in, advanced practice skills such as health assessment and prescribing.

This role requires you to adapt to a number of different scenarios and be able to use your clinical knowledge and assessment in a variety of ways, ensuring our patients have access to expert care and advice throughout their life from the CNS team.

Within your allocated areas of responsibility you will implement and innovative change in service delivery, which includes development of guidelines, operational policies and educational materials to ensure safe and streamlined service delivery

You will need excellent communication skills to present to MDT meetings, study sessions, meetings and conferences

You will need to deliver holistic care and work well with patients and their families, building life-long collaborative relationships.
