The Acute Stroke Unit has an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join our friendly, supportive and dynamic acute nursing team.

The ideal candidate will be expected to maintain high standards of care within our stroke unit, meeting national and local guidelines --the involvement of the stroke pathway begins in the emergency department and you will be contributing to the care and planning throughout the stroke pathway.

We are a 36 bedded stroke unit with facilities for 12 hyper acute patients. We provide individualised care to all our patients working closely with our multi -- disciplinary team. We admit, assess and provide hyper acute stroke care for all 4 hospitals within the University hospital group.

You must have excellent communication skills and be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team, whilst being able to lead and maintain outstanding standards of care. The Ward Sister/Charge Nurse is someone whom is equally accountable for the day to day running of the ward and staff, acting as a positive role model at all times.

You will be expected to promote innovative thinking and provide inspirational leadership and managerial support to all members of the multidisciplinary team.

You will be supported by the Ward Manager, Stroke Nurses, Consultants and Matron.

Internal rotation to nights is part of the role

Main duties, tasks & skills required

As a Band 6 Ward Sister you will care for patients in the acute phase of their stroke and you will be supported by a highly motivated team. This is a busy multi-disciplinary stroke unit where the team is friendly and dedicated to promoting individualised stroke care.

As a band 6 registered nurse you will support the Ward Manager in promoting change and developing the ward maintaining our high level of standards. You must be committed to continuously striving to improve the patient experience and outcome at every opportunity utilising a person centred approach.

Level 2 care -- following thrombolysis/thrombectomy

Managing a group of patients

Nurse in charge

Preceptor/mentor

Excellent communication skills

Ability to work in a fast paced environment

Good time management skills

Updating computerised systems as part of nurse in charge role

Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC register 

Desirable

Health care management / leadership qualification

Experience

Essential

Substantial post registration experience working in a complex health care setting / Acute NHS care setting supervising / mentoring junior staff
Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD
Demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice-based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff
Experience of mentoring undergraduate students
Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department
Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice
