University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS).

An opportunity has arisen for a Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Toxicology team based primarily at Heartlands Hospital. The post holder will be required to take an active role in the provision of the toxicology service which provides analysis and interpretation for UHB, other hospitals and HM Coroner.

The Toxicology Department provides a range of services including specialist chromatography and mass spectrometry and is equipped with technologies including: Waters QtoF, Thermo Scientific ICP-MS, GC-MS and GC-MS Headspace, Agilent HPLC- DAD, Shimadzu HPLC and Sciex LC-MS/MS.

The post is a non- rotational MLA that will work within Specialist Testing and Toxicology, it is a full time permanent position (37.5 hrs per week). This is not a direct route to obtaining the IBMS Portfolio.

The Toxicology section operates shifts within the hours 8am- 6pm (Mon- Fri) but may in future operate between 8am- 8pm including weekends to meet service requirements.

We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards, MHRA approved and IBMS accredited for training.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The post holder will be required to take an active role in the provision of the Specialist Testing and Toxicology service which provides analysis and interpretation for UHB, other hospitals and HM Coroner. They will be required to liaise with the BMS and Clinical Scientists within the section to provide high quality analysis over an extensive repertoire.

Duties will include:

Preparation of reagents according to standard operating procedure as directed by a supervisor

Preparation and loading of samples to laboratory analysers

Routine specimen filing and disposal according to laboratory protocols

Data entry

Restocking laboratory supplies

Laboratory administration duties

General housekeeping duties including cleaning, maintenance and monitoring of laboratory equipment and inform supervisor of any non- conformances.
