The Nuclear Medicine Service is a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment facility based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, with satellite facilities at Good Hope Hospital, Heartlands Hospital and Birmingham Children's Hospital. The case mix is highly specialised, and this is reflected in the range of investigations and treatments that are provided. The Service actively participates in R&D. The post holder will provide scientific support across the broad range of Nuclear Medicine and PET diagnostic and research imaging investigations, non-imaging tests and wide range of radionuclide therapies.
This will include service development and clinical audit, quality assurance of imaging and non-imaging equipment, first line equipment maintenance and liaison with equipment manufacturers, processing of patient images and non-imaging data. The post holder will have a good working knowledge of relevant legislation, particularly IRR17 and IRMER17 ionising radiation regulations.
The post holder will have knowledge and experience in the field of Nuclear Medicine, possess excellent organisational and IT skills and be able to participate in developing the service in line with the best national and international standards.
You will work as part of the Nuclear Medicine physics team to provide scientific support to the on-site Nuclear Medicine department and PET centre as well as support the Nuclear Medicine departments at Heartlands and Good Hope hospitals. This will include: equipment QC, image optimisation work, ensuring legislative compliance, provision of ad-hoc scientific advice, be involved with and support the provision of radionuclide therapies, perform first-line equipment maintenance and liaise with manufacturers, processing of imaging and non imaging test, training of staff in radiation protection, the disposal of radioactive waste, the maintenance of radiation safety and the keeping of appropriate records, be able to handle unsealed radioactive liquids and body fluids and to be able to manipulate these safely and accurately with due regard to radiation and microbiological safety, participate in radiation decontamination procedures and clean-up of hazardous radioactive spills when required. You may be called upon in the event of a major radiation incident (by those on the first line call out duties) to assist in the setting up of and providing support at either the A&E Dept or a Remote Monitoring Unit including possible out of hours attendance. You will undertake, and keep appropriate records of, Continuing Professional Development in order to enhance practice and meet the conditions of state registration. *Honours degree in Physics or other relevant subject, or equivalent
*Relevant higher degree (e.g. MSc, MPhil, PhD) or equivalent
*Completion of NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) or equivalent
*Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health & Care Professions Council
*Membership of IPEM or other relevant professional body
*Significant experience of Imaging with Ionizing Radiation at basic training level or equivalent
*Experience of gamma camera and PET quality assurance techniques
*Good understanding of radiation protection principles and legislation, e.g. IRMER17, IRR17, EPR16 & radioactive transport regs, national & international standards, professional & regulatory body reports and guidelines.
*Experience of a range of dedicated nuclear medicine software.
*Experience of managing the work of trainee clinical scientists
*Experience of assisting with the supervision of MSc and other project students
*Possesses the analytical skills and judgment to deal with complex situations such as advising on appropriate nuclear medicine procedures for patients, balancing risks and benefits, and choosing appropriate analysis methods for calculation & presentation of results.
*Possesses the skills to analyse, interpret and report a range of non-imaging investigations, and to check nuclear medicine imaging reports and images for accuracy, under supervision of the senior clinical scientists.
*Able to plan and organise activities, e.g. the introduction of new quality assurance procedures or modifications to test procedures.
*Able to exercise initiative when dealing with issues within own areas of competence,
*Able to recognise limitations of own expertise and when to seek help from senior colleagues
*A broad range of IT skills, being competent with PCs, email, Microsoft Office applications, internet searching, exporting of images and scientific programming.
*Ability to communicate complex information both orally and in writing to large clinical, scientific, technical and other staff groups at national and international conferences and for peer reviewed journals.
*Good communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills for working within multidisciplinary team environment.
*Able to work in a patient environment, maintaining patient confidentiality and dignity and being aware of infection control hazards and policies.
*Able to work safely with radioactive materials and x-rays, understanding the hazards posed and precautions and security needed.
*Able to regularly work safely with radioactive blood and urine, maintaining standards of biological and radiation safety.
*Good manual dexterity to handle radioactive sources and expensive (delicate) equipment.
*Able to cope with unpredictable work patterns where patient-related situations requiring instant attention arise and priorities change on a daily basis.
