Job summary

Due to retirement University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) is seeking to recruit a Head Biomedical scientist to lead and develop our Cellular Pathology, Mortuary and Human Tissue services across our Trust.

This is an exciting career defining opportunity to join one of the largest NHS Trusts with state of the art facilities employing over 20,000 colleagues across 4 sites.

With a workforce of around 150 staff helping to provide Cellular Pathology, Mortuary and Human Tissue services, you would be part of a UKAS accredited service. UHB Cellular Pathology is accredited by UKAS, holds HTA licences and is an IBMS approved training laboratory for HCPC Registration and Specialist Training. The Department also participates in UK NEQAS External Quality Assurance Schemes. The Department is led by both a Clinical Service Lead (medical) and a Head Biomedical Scientist (technical).

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to configure the future of this comprehensive Cellular Pathology service across 4 hospital sites in the years to come. The Department supports a wide range of internal and external specialties, and includes provision for neuro, bone/soft tissue, muscle and haem path services. There is a comprehensive repertoire of special stains, IHC, IMF, histochemistry, electron microscopy and cytology and andrology. Cell Path oversees the 4 Hospital Mortuary sites with a new integrated Mortuary IT system. Post mortem activity within the Trust is covered by 2 HTA licenses. The post holder also manages the QE based Tissue Services team that supports compliance of the Trust's Human Applications license.

Success in this role will drive ambitions for continuous quality, capacity and performance improvements across Cell Path, remaining focused on the increasing clinical requirements to include cancer faster diagnosis specification.

You will work closely with the team to manage the ongoing modernisation and major equipment refresh and automation projects will be directed by the Head BMS. The Department works across the wider Birmingham and Solihull 'BSOL' Cell Path Lab network and this includes digital pathology implementation, imminent new LIMS implementation.

Qualifications

Essential

* HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist (Health Care Professionals Council)

* MSc degree or equivalent

* Fellow of Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS)

* Higher Specialist Diploma or Equivalent

* Evidence of continuing professional development

* Advanced specialist knowledge of discipline

* Excellent knowledge of current Employment Law, Health and Safety Legislation and requirements.

* Knowledge of NHS IT systems and their impact on laboratory medicine and clinical requirements.

* Knowledge of the UKAS and HCPC accreditation requirements and the ability to meet these.

* Knowledge of NHS HE, finance, corporate and clinical governance and purchasing systems.

* Evidence of formal NHS training commensurate with a senior NHS manager; for example, interview skills, discipline management, financial management etc.

Experience

Essential

Extensive experience in a senior managerial role e.g. managing a department or a major section of a department, including HR, operational, finance, quality, and decision making experience.
