Job summary

We are looking for a motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our diverse team to support the provision of pharmaceutical care in Adult Parenteral Nutrition and Intestinal failure service.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

Main duties of the job

*Taking a comprehensive drug history and identifying issues for home parenteral nutrition (HPN) patients including details of parenteral nutrition (PN) -- while in patients or in preparation for the pharmacist led telephone clinic.

*Counselling patients how to take medication and importance of compliance in intestinal failure particularly short bowel syndrome.

*Assist the pharmacist in providing ongoing advice and support for complex patients referred to the pharmacy team by medical or surgical staff.

*Use the external ordering platform for inpatient PN ordering and for HPN prescriptions ready for review and order by the intestinal failure pharmacist.

*Check and release PN and provide good stock rotation and relabelling to reduce waste.

*Train other pharmacy staff to check PN to allow cross cover for sickness and annual leave and work on current SOPs to ensure up to date practices.

*Prepare information for patients for alternatives where shortages arise.

*Provide training sessions for staff on enteral route administration.

> Participating in late nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Qualifications

Essential

*NVQ3 or BTEC in pharmaceutical science or equivalent plus additional training for checking dispensed prescriptions, supervising a technical area within the pharmacy to degree or equivalent level

or

*Knowledge of medicines management, including relevant legislation and policies acquired through NVQ3 or BTEC equivalent level qualification plus specialist training and experience to degree or equivalent level

*Dispensing Accuracy Accreditation, West Midland's scheme or equivalent

*Evidence of Continued Professional Development

*Professional Registration with the GPhC

*Accredited Checking Technician (National Framework)

*Two years' work experience in Pharmacy pre-qualification

*Currently practicing as a band 4 pharmacy technician / equivalent or above with post-qualification experience within an acute setting

*The ability to demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge and the relevant practical experience for the post.

*Significant experience within a pharmacy setting

*Experience of the specialist function for area of responsibility

*Experience of organising other grades of staff and their workload

*Experienced in working to policies and procedures.

*Significant experience within a hospital pharmacy setting

*Understanding of Good Distribution Practice (GDP)

*Understanding of dispensing, stock control, supply, and I.T systems and processes
