Job summary

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a specialised clinical service mainly based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (HH) with some duties at Good Hope (GH) Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth (QE) Hospital on occasion as well as, possibly, Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH). We are seeking a Nuclear Medicine Technologist to take the principal role at the HH site and work with radiologists, consultants, nursing and radiography staff to provide a world class general nuclear medicine service.

The post-holder will be the Principal Nuclear Medicine Lead of the HH site working alongside the Principal Technologist from GH and be part of the large UHB Nuclear Medicine Team that crosses 4 sites. This is a multidisciplinary team that provides routine and complex diagnostic Nuclear Medicine and PET processes, therapeutic procedures and services directly to patients of all ages.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The lead will have responsibility for facilitating speciality projects, day to day supervision of clinical staff ensuring provision of an effective/efficient service, liaison with the management team ensuring resources/abilities are in place, act as staff rep. in strategic planning/departmental performance reviews. Responsible for initiating/organising audits, acting as site H&S Officer, working with physicists/radiologists to improve/develop the service. Active involvement performing a wide range of diagnostic procedures on patients of all ages, dispensing and administration of radioactive materials, acquisition of images, analysing/calculating results, disposal and management of radioactive waste/stock. Mainly based at HH site with duties at the other sites providing teaching, advice, assessment, supervision and mentorship to staff and trainees across UHB NM Service under direction of the Management Team. As a senior member of staff they are required to work unsupervised at all times and line manage their own staff group. They are part of the team responsible for the organisation of daily and future department clinical workload, adapting in response to changes in levels of demand and capacity. They will be involved in the recruitment and selection of technical staff, deputising for members of the Management Team in their absence, authorising investigations and allocating appointments for complex procedures.

Qualifications

Essential

BSc Hons Clinical Technology (nuclear medicine), Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent.

Developed highly, specialist knowledge and experience across a range of work procedures (MSc level) -- gained from experience, short courses and study and to have rotated and actively participated in all areas of specialist work.

Post Graduate Diploma or equivalent level of knowledge.

Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD).

Experience

Significant diagnostic Nuclear Medicine Experience

Specialist experience in functional imaging

Experience of dispensing and administering diagnostic and therapy Radiopharmaceuticals

Expected to carry out specialist procedures with highly complex equipment, adapting protocols where necessary.

Experience of working within a quality management system.

Have a working knowledge of a range of specialist practice. Innovative skills required to develop work procedures.

Evidence of direct involvement with the technical support for a clinical nuclear medicine department, covering a full range of in vivo and in vitro procedures, therapy applications and imaging.

Possess a developed specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of nuclear medicine imaging and non-imaging procedures and analysis. Able to perform a full range of diagnostic test procedures on patients of all ages including paediatric.

Possess specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of radiopharmacy with the ability to dispense and administer intravenous radiopharmaceuticals.

Able to devise, write and implement investigational protocols and procedures

Expected to carry out specialist procedures with highly complex equipment, adapting protocols where necessary.

Knowledge of the safe use of expensive and highly complex imaging, non-imaging and related equipment (>50,000)

Has knowledge of NHS working environment within the field of nuclear medicine / PET

Demonstrates a specialist theoretical and practical knowledge relating to the hazards posed by and the precautions required when dealing with ionising radiation arising from sealed and unsealed radioactive diagnostic and therapeutic sources and patients.

Has a high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge of radiation protection issues and radioactive decontamination.

Has a developed understanding of patient, staff and public risks arising from radiation exposure

Has a high level of knowledge of radiation protection and legislation relating to nuclear medicine i.e, Ionising Radiations Regulations, Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations, Radioactive Substances Act, Medicines Act Radioactive Substances, Transport Regulations and Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC) guidelines

Experience of working within a quality management system including the ability to take part in the development of a quality system

Demonstrates significant experience of providing and delivering teaching, training and assessment of junior staff

Able to manipulate scientific data (e.g to present at national/scientific meetings etc)
