Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and well-motivated individual to join the Medicines Information team at University Hospitals Birmingham.

We are a small, friendly team based at Solihull Hospital committed to providing a high quality service to the Trust, and our patients.

The post holder will work closely with the rest of the Medicines Information team to ensure day to day provision of the Medicines Information Service and Medicines Helpline for the Trust. They will provide evidence-based information and expert advice on the use of medicines to answer patient specific enquiries about medicines, and to provide proactive advice and information to ensure the safe, effective and economic use of medicines.

We are looking for a pharmacist with post-graduate clinical experience, experience of delivering training in a healthcare setting, and an interest and enthusiasm for this specialist area of pharmacy. Experience in Medicines Information is desirable but not essential.

Applicants who don't meet the criteria in the person specification relating to diploma status but who can demonstrate at least 12 months post-registration hospital experience are invited to apply and will be appointed in a progressional post under Agenda for Change Annex 21 (payment at 75% of the maximum band 7 pay, uplifted to the starting pay of a band 7 as per Agenda for Change on completion of the first year of clinical diploma).

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The post holder will support the Advanced Clinical Pharmacist -- Medicines Information to manage, develop and deliver the Medicines Information Service for University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. They will deputise for the Specialist Clinical Pharmacist -- Medicines Information as needed.

They will provide day to day supervision, authorisation, and senior support to Pharmacy Technicians working in Medicines Information, and to those on rotations in Medicines Information.

The post will enable the development of enquiry answering skills to provide evidence-based information and expert advice on the use of medicines to answer patient specific enquiries about medicines, and to provide proactive advice and information to ensure the safe, effective and economic use of medicines.

The post holder will be responsible for leading on training within Medicines Information. This includes training for internal pharmacy staff, trainee pharmacists and undergraduate students.

The post holder will participate in general pharmaceutical patient services within the Trust and participate in the on-call service.

The post holder will work across all sites with their main base being at Solihull Hospital.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

Master's degree in Pharmacy or equivalent

Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council

Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy (equivalent to first year of Clinical Diploma) gained or equivalent qualification or experience

Experience

Essential

Minimum 12 months post-registration work experience as a pharmacist in hospital pharmacy, or the ability to demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge

Experience in a range of clinical specialties

Has a familiarity with dispensary based services

Excellent knowledge of general clinical pharmacy and drug use

Accurate clinical, dispensing and checking abilities

Experience in advising and counselling patients

Previous participation in multi-disciplinary team

Experience of project work

Experience of analysing and applying highly complex clinical and research data

An understanding of governance, risk management and medication safety

Experience of audit work and/or practice research

In-depth knowledge of Continuing Professional Development process and of Plan & Record system
