Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to take on a new role of Ward Based Therapy Support Worker. We are recruiting to these posts on trauma and orthopaedic wards at BHH

Ward Based Therapy Support Workers will be an integral part of our friendly and supportive multi-professional ward teams of therapists and nursing staff. The roles will be key in improving the 'Eat, Drink, Dress, Move' culture on our wards, supporting an enabling and rehabilitation approach to care.

The shifts offered across 7 day working are early shifts. The core hours are 7am-3pm, however we are flexible as the role integrates into the team. There will be no overnight working in these posts but there will be pay enhancement for weekend working.

Post holders will be based on a specified ward as part of the ward team. You will work closely with the nursing and therapy teams to support patients to increase daily mobility and functional activity and to support good nutrition and hydration. The role includes aspects of nursing care, physiotherapy and occupational therapy and nutritional care

We are looking for enthusiastic, compassionate people who have relevant health care experience and are passionate and understanding about motivating others during recovery from illness and during rehabilitation.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The role of Ward Based Therapy Support Worker would be ideal for an experienced HCA who is looking for a new challenge and is keen to develop their rehabilitation skills, or for a therapy support worker interested in taking on a ward based role. Applicants must have proven communication skills and demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team and be able to work independently with guidance.

Patient related tasks will be varied and will deliver a therapeutic approach to reflect daily activities to help patients improve their independence in preparation for discharge, such as getting in and out of bed, eating and drinking, walking, washing, dressing and toileting and to practice exercise plans at an individual patient level.

Post holders will receive full competency based training and will have opportunity to take part in regular in --service training to develop their learning.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

*Education to GCSE level or equivalent including English and maths

*Able to demonstrate competence in maths and written and spoken English

*Educated to A Level / NVQ 3/ BTEC or equivalent (e.g NVQ 2 or similar vocational qualification PLUS experience working in a care setting)

*Care certificate or be willing to work towards this

Desirable

*Evidence of recent education / personal development related to Healthcare.

Experience

Essential

*Relevant therapy / health / social care experience

*Experience of dealing with people

*Experience of working in a team

*Can demonstrate a broad understanding of relevant areas of therapy, the effect of illness/critical conditions / disability on function and health and basic aims of rehabilitation

*Good understanding of the role of therapy support worker in the relevant area

*Understanding of confidentiality and data protection in healthcare

Desirable

*Experience of communicating with and motivating patients who may have communication difficulties

*Experience of working in a role supporting therapists

*Experience of working with the relevant patient group

*Broad understanding of working environment --healthcare/NHS/UHB trust/acute care/community as applicable
