Job summary

RRPPS is recruiting to a 1 year fixed term Band 7 clinical scientist post to cover maternity leave. You will join our team of Clinical Scientists and Clinical Technologists in the Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection service. This post provides an opportunity for a HCPC registered clinical scientist to expand their experience. We are ideally looking for a registered clinical scientist, but we would consider appointment at a lower band for an unregistered candidate.

RRPPS is part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and provides Medical Physics and Radiation Protection services to the Trust and to several customers in the Midlands and further afield. Customers are in NHS Trusts, private healthcare, education and industry. RRPPS staff includes Clinical Scientists and Clinical Technologists in Diagnostic Radiology, Radiation Protection, Nuclear Medicine, MRI and Non-ionising Radiation. We also have an Approved Dosimetry Service and an Instrument Calibration Service.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

You will assist the Medical Physics Experts (MPE) and the Radiation Protection Advisers (RPA) in giving advice to customers for Diagnostic Radiology and Radiotherapy. You will perform safety and quality assurance surveys on x-ray equipment. You will participate in the training activities of RRPPS which includes training of Clinical Scientists and Clinical Technologists. Some of this work will take place at customer sites so a full driving licence is required. The post is full time (37.5 hours per week).

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

Honours degree in Physics or other relevant subject, or equivalent

Relevant higher degree (eg MSc, MPhil, PhD) or equivalent

Has completed and passed the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) or equivalent.

Has state registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health & Care Professions Council

Experience

Essential

Has experience of quality assurance and safety surveys of diagnostic x-ray equipment

Has experience of radiation protection in diagnostic radiology

Specialist knowledge of a range of working practices and equipment in diagnostic x-ray, building on theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

Knowledge & experience to provide specialist advice to customers about complex issues such as potential risks from ionising radiation.

Good understanding of radiation protection principles and legislation, e.g. IRMER & IRR17
