Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen as a Band 6 Specimen Reception Manager within Specimen Reception Department, Pathology, Laboratory Medicine Directorate.

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital. Specimen Reception Department receives, prepares and ensures that all samples are logged into laboratory information systems for their onward journey within the laboratory complex.

We are seeking for a proactive, experienced and dynamic individual with an appropriate level of knowledge and skills to join the Specimen Reception team. As part of this job, you will be expected to work as a part of a wider Pathology team as well as other service users. You will need to have knowledge and understanding of NHS processes and targets and would be desirable if you have previous experience in a large busy laboratory.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The post holder will be expected to work across all UHB sites to manage the responsibility for the day to day management and operational of the Specimen Reception Department. You will assist and support the Specimen Reception Lead in developing and implementing short and long term strategies. Promote positive behavioural approaches to the support the team and to service users. Participate in and facilitate Quality Assurance and Audit within the Department. Implement Trust policies and procedures at department level, demonstrate awareness and compliance with Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards and work towards promoting these to others. Assist in the harmonisation and implementation, development and evaluation of new and existing processes. May be expected to lead on investigations or hearing disciplinary. Participate in the collection of audit and research data as required. Assist in departmental service improvement and efficiency projects such as LIMS.

The post holder will require strong staff management, organisational and supervisory skills. You will also be able to communicate effectively with service users both within and outside of the organisation.

Qualifications

Essential

*Good General Education (e.g. GCSE English and Maths A-C, GCSE Level 9-4).

*Business Administration Level 3 or equivalent experience in an administrative environment.

*Degree or Health related equivalent qualification.

*Post Graduate Diploma or equivalent or Demonstrable equivalent experience.

Desirable

*Scientific Degree.
