University Hospitals Birmingham NHS foundation Trust (UHB) has a fantastic opportunity for an experienced nurse to join us in a senior nurse role as a Band 6 sister / charge nurse. Multiple positions have become available (substantive and 12 month secondment development opportunity) as a result of our recently realigned trauma and orthopaedic services on the heartlands hospital site.

Ward 17/18 have 25 inpatient beds and are acute orthopaedic wards that specialise in patients who have fractured neck of femurs and require surgical management.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

In this role the expectation is for you to have day to day responsibility for the smooth running of the ward, whilst providing clinical leadership to the nursing team and ensuring that care is delivered to a high clinical standard.

You will be expected to support the Senior ward Sister, this will include, supervision of junior colleagues and students, appraisals, sickness management, incident reporting, audits, roster production, maintenance of duty rosters on a daily basis, complaint management and support a positive environment for both staff, patients and visitors to the ward. The post is a rotational shift, working both nights and days, and you will be assisting the Senior Sister in leading an experienced nursing team. Having day to day responsibility for the smooth running of the ward, whilst providing clinical leadership to the nursing team and ensuring that care is delivered to a high clinical standard. Qualifications

Essential

*Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC register 

Desirable

*Health care management / leadership qualification

Experience

Essential

*Substantial post registration experience working in a complex health care setting / Acute NHS care setting supervising / mentoring junior staff

*Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD

*Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment

*Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration

*Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff

*Experience of mentoring undergraduate students

*Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department

*Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice.
