Thanks to new funding, we're thrilled to offer a permanent opportunity at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, to join our dedicated Dietetic Critical Care Team. With 100 critical care beds across four units, this is a unique chance to work in a fast-paced, clinically rich environment. This role is ideal for a Dietitian looking to develop their clinical expertise, leadership capabilities, and service development skills within a supportive and forward-thinking team.
You'll work closely with the Clinical Lead Dietitian and other Band 7 Specialist Critical Care Dietitians, supported by two Band 6 colleagues. You'll also be an integral part of a large, multidisciplinary critical care team that highly values the dietetic contribution.
The post offers an excellent opportunity to be involved with research, audit and presenting at conferences nationally and internationally.
This post is based on the Surgical Critical Care Unit. You'll have the chance to work closely with liver transplant patients, as well as those undergoing hepatobiliary surgery, upper gastrointestinal (UGI) procedures, and complex gastro surgeries. This is a fantastic environment for anyone passionate about making a real impact in critical care, learning from cutting-edge surgical practices, and being part of a supportive, multidisciplinary team.
This post involves the nutritional management of highly complex patients requiring a range of therapeutic diets, oral nutritional supplements, and advanced enteral feeding via multiple routes, including nasogastric (NG), nasojejunal (NJ), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), radiologically inserted gastrostomy (RIG), and jejunostomy (JEJ). Demonstrated clinical experience in managing complex enteral feeding is essential for this role
QEHB is a major trauma centre, and the trauma teams work closely with the critical care teams and they also have a strong working partnership with the royal centre of defence medicine to treat both military and civilian patients. The critical care unit is also a specialist provider with a wide range of disciplines including cardiothoracic surgery, renal, burns, liver, major trauma, neurosurgery, transplant etc. This post will give you the opportunity to develop a highly specialist dietetic service, alongside the other specialist dietitians and clinical lead for critical care.

Main Duties & Tasks Continued
You will work within a multi professional framework and work towards individual and team objectives set by evidence based clinical practice, management, education, research and audit.
You will support service quality improvement initiatives ensuring patient outcomes are optimised. You will contribute to dietetic, therapy and Trust wide policies, strategies, guidelines, standards and protocols.
You will need to have excellent communication and leadership skills, be adaptable and confident to work autonomously and with other members of staff within a supportive team. We expect you to be enthusiastic, motivated, able to evidence continuing professional development and keen to develop yourself and others. You will have line management responsibilities for more junior staff and also provide student training supervision.
- Evidence of relevant GCSE, NVQ, GNVQ, AS and A levels
- Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent
- Registration with HCPC
- MSc or equivalent experience e.g.,advanced level of clinical practice /relevant postgraduate, professionally accredited courses
- Significant post-graduate experience in relevant specialist area
- Practical skill & in-depth experience in a multi-disciplinary setting in relevant specialist field evidenced by a learning portfolio and leading to advanced theoretical knowledge in
area/s of clinical practice
- Significant to substantial postgraduate experience of working in a specialist capacity in multi-disciplinary teams leading to the acquisition of advanced theoretical knowledge and highly developed skills.
- Experience of training Dietetic students
- Evidence of relevant continued professional development in following areas
- Clinical e.g.
o accredited specialist training courses
o attendance at specialist group meetings of BDA
o Advanced Diploma in Dietetic Practice
o attendance at relevant multi-disciplinary courses/conferences
- Teaching e.g.
o presentation skills
o clinical supervisory skills training for student trainingo communication skill training / counselling skills training
o cognitive behaviour therapy training (CBT)
- High level of dietetic knowledge gained through attendance at postgraduate specialist courses
- In depth knowledge of research and audit
- In depth knowledge of nutritional assessment / nutritional screening tools
- Knowledge and experience of all types of nutritional support
- Maintains excellent knowledge of clinical developments
- Requires working knowledge of IT / computer programmes
- Evidence of ongoing regular attendance on post-graduate training courses and clinical development at highly specialist level
- Evidence of attendance at national conferences
- Knowledge of the Strategic direction of the Trust
Experience of teaching professional and patient groups
